What do they look like?

Despite that they are called “Australian cockroaches”, these roaches are common species globally and are introduced species in Australia. It is common in countries with tropical climates and is thought to originate in Africa.

This insect can move very fast and can dart out of sight, They enter rooms through small cracks, holes or any open windows and doors, with its wings and is a capable flyer.

They are cold-tolerant that is why they brood in warm areas. Even if it’s snowing outside, where there is warmth, they go and capable of thriving indoors. Like most cockroaches they are scavengers but they eat mostly on plants but can also feed on a wide array of organic materials such as decaying matter.

There are around 450 species of cockroaches in Australia, but very few are categorised as pest. In fact, there are three common types of roaches found in Australian homes and businesses, mainly, German cockroaches, American cockroaches and Australian cockroaches (which isn’t a native at all in the country).

Signs of Infestation

Cockroaches usually leave trails of evidence so it is easy to spot and assume an infestation. They are mostly active at night and hide out of sight during the day. Because they are nocturnal pests, they sneak in and out of the household, they feast on food and other matter that can eventually affect the sanitation of your area.

Here are some simple ways to spot on a cockroach infestation:

• Droppings – they leave dust of black droppings that looks like coffee grounds or peppers and varies in lengths.
• Smear marks – cockroaches usually leave smear marks whenever they are in places with water. Where water is abundant, cockroaches will leave brown and irregular marks as they crawl or nest.
• Egg capsules (ootheca) – roaches lay eggs in capsules or known as ootheca which carries multiples of eggs. These capsules are smoky brown in colour.
• Shed skin – cockroaches shed skin 5 to 8 times as they mature and grow in size. Look out for these skin sheds which varies in size in location which you suspect they are nestling.
• Unusual odour – cockroaches produces pheromones that are unpleasant to the nose of humans. When they defecate, it emits musty scent and taints items that comes in contact with their waste. The smell will be really obvious as the infestation grows.
• Damages – Cockroaches do not only attack food and food packages, they also likely to feed on organic materials such as leather and books.

Common places of infestation

Depending on the kind of roach specie, most cockroaches especially those who love to nestle in cool areas, they are likely found in bathrooms, laundry rooms, drainage, under the sink and basement. Whereas those who love humid weather such as the Australian cockroaches, they can be found either outdoors or in any areas where favourable temperature is present such as the kitchen, bedroom, attics and basements.

Insecticide and cleaning the house and surrounding areas may be helpful to control the infestation of these nasty, creepy crawlers but there are instances that these measures are not enough.
